25.01.2022 Congratulations everyone!

24.01.2022 Dr Angelica Ly was invited to be the keynote speaker at the University of Melbourne Doctor of Optometry Student Conference last week. The conference had a strong focus on collaboration and Angelica presented on the collaborative work the Centre is currently doing with other health professionals, and how this can lead to better patient outcomes. She also gave some valuable tips on how optometrists can go about building collaboration within their own practice.

24.01.2022 The last group of final year UNSW Optometry and Vision Science students finished their rotation at CFEH last week. The Centre’s staff want to thank them for showing such enthusiasm to learn, and also for the delicious cake! #sovs #unsw #centreforeyehealth

24.01.2022 Glaucoma researchers Dr Jack Phu and Prof Michael Kalloniatis have been working hard to identify better ways to perform visual field tests in clinical practice. Their most recent paper has just been accepted for publication in the prestigious American Journal of Ophthalmology. This paper builds on the authors previous research into the new SITA Faster testing paradigm. Earlier analysis identified elevated false positive rates and seeding point errors with SITA Faster, and... this latest paper proposes a systematic approach to seeding point error assessment. Using this approach, this study showed that seeding point errors can be identified in the early phases of testing, alerting the perimetrist to repeat the test. The authors have also developed a flow chart for this approach, helping clinicians easily implement these findings into their everyday practice. The paper is open access and available at https://www.ajo.com/article/S0002-9394(20)30413-X/fulltext UNSW Optometry and Vision Science Optometry NSW / ACT Optometry Australia

24.01.2022 Congratulations Wilson!

23.01.2022 Tonight at 7:30pm, Prof Michael Kalloniatis is presenting an online lecture for the Australian College of Optometry webinar series. Michael will be looking at colour vision, covering basic concepts and cutting-edge clinical techniques and demonstrating the clinical application of these.

22.01.2022 A recently published paper evaluates the Centre for Eye Healths integrated approach to care which sees optometrists, ophthalmologists, general practitioners and endocrinologists working in partnership toward a common goal to identify those at risk of vision loss and to catch it early so as to manage and treat it before they lose vision in the first place. Diabetes is one of the top five conditions that leads to irreversible vision loss through damage to the eye. Addressing... the barriers known to affect assessment rates for people with eye disease related to their diabetes has meant that more clients will benefit from this approach. 22.01.2022 The article below is a good illustration of the positive impact telehealth can make in remote communities. Worth a read!

21.01.2022 Due to ongoing community transmission of COVID-19 in NSW, the state government strongly recommends the wearing of masks if it is hard to maintain a 1.5m distance from other people. Based on this recommendation, all CFEH clinicians, students and patients are required to wear a mask at all times while at the Centre (unless there are health reasons not to). Please help us keep our staff, patients and wider community safe by respecting this policy.

21.01.2022 Dr Lisa Nivison-Smith is leading a collaborative study between CFEH and the Singapore National Eye Centre that examines changes in the choroid with age. Recently Dr Nivison-Smith had a paper published relating to this research. The paper analyses aging changes in the choroid relative to eccentricity. The studys findings may be helpful when trying to differentiate between normal and disease-related changes in the choroid. Attached is an infographic outlining the key finding...s and the paper is open access and may be accessed at: https://rdcu.be/b5nHg UNSW Optometry and Vision Science

09.01.2022 Early detection saves sight. Today is World Sight Day. We wanted to remind everyone about the importance of having your eyes tested regularly and there is no more powerful way to do this than hearing about someone’s personal experience: In late 2010, CFEH identified an ocular melanoma in my eye - a diagnosis later confirmed by an oncologist from Prince of Wales Hospital. I was referred to a specialist ophthalmic surgeon who treated the melanoma with transpupillary thermo...therapy (TTT), a type of laser surgery. This initial visit to CFEH saved not just my eye but quite likely my life, as ocular melanoma is an insidious disease that often goes undetected. 08.01.2022 This year, for National Diabetes Week 2020 we would like to reiterate the importance of early detection, prevention, and management of diabetes. Patients with diabetes share a common burden of having to maintain good glycaemic control on an ongoing basis and manage their diabetes self-care in general day-to-day life. As a result, it is critical that optometrists recognise their role in the multidisciplinary diabetes team including the importance of maintaining good communic...ation with other associated health professionals and educating patients about early detection and prevention. In patients who present with signs of diabetic retinopathy, a collaborative approach using telehealth review and advanced imaging technologies such as OCT angiography and widefield imaging can enhance patient care. Given the prevalence of diabetes in Western Sydney, our new clinic is ideally located in Parramatta and is accessible by public transport. 07.01.2022 New COVID-19 research from Prince of Wales Hospital: As primary care providers, optometrists are often in close contact with patients during slit lamp examinations. This exposure means they are at a greater risk of transmission from contagious diseases such as SARS-CoV-2. Professor Minas Coroneo from the Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick has recently published an article in The Ocular Surface journal discussing viable options to address this problem through eye drops or aeros...ol sprays, to make eye health examinations safer for both optometrists and patients. With future research to translate these proposed interventions into safe and effective eye drops or aerosols, there is promise for solutions that optometrists can use to limit virus transmission. 01.01.2022 This National Diabetes Week marks the beginning of a new campaign by Diabetes Australia Heads Up. Its time to have a conversation about the real impact diabe...tes can have on a persons wellbeing both mentally and physically. Did you know that 69% of people living with diabetes worry about developing a diabetes-related complication such as low vision or blindness? At Guide Dogs, weve found that people living with low vision or blindness, are 2.5 times more likely to suffer depression. These symptoms also result in a person being less likely to access the necessary support services, increasing their risk of isolation and loss of independence. This week its essential for us to remind our community about the preventable measures you can take to manage your eye health, starting with regular eye checks. A big thank you to Australian of the Year, Dr James Muecke for sharing this valuable message with the Guide Dogs community. [Video description: A video of Dr James Muecke standing in a room, speaking directly to the camera. Behind him is an artwork hanging on the wall.]

01.01.2022 Following a prolonged shut down of the Sutherland Hospital clinic due to hospital COVID-19 restrictions, the unfortunate decision has been made to permanently close the CFEH arm of this clinic to concentrate resources on the provision of services in Western Sydney. CFEH Executive Team are especially thankful to Michael Yapp, Gonzalo Jacome, Sophia Zhang and Angelica Ly, who worked so hard to build this clinic up while also fostering new inter-disciplinary relationships. We h...ave enjoyed the opportunity to contribute to improving the eye health of residents in the Shire, in collaboration with optometrists in the local community as well as ophthalmologists, neurologists, endocrinologists and geriatricians within the hospital. Despite the collaboration discontinuing, we are very proud of the model we developed and the patients we have helped over the past few years. The positive effect this had on patient care cannot be underestimated and the presence of the Centre in years to come will be missed. The Sutherland Hospital will continue to provide some ophthalmology services, however please contact the hospital for current referral criteria. CFEH services will continue to be available at both Kensington and Parramatta.

01.01.2022 CFEH Paper of the Month. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Australia, but the National Eye Health survey found that 50% of people with glaucoma did not even know they had glaucoma! Vigilant early detection and effective evidence-based treatment will go a long way towards reducing the burden of blindness arising from glaucoma. In our inaugural Paper of the Month, Dr Jack Phu and colleagues provide an overview of the most recent evidence-based treatmen...t strategies for glaucoma and propose a practical, evidence-based framework to help guide optometrists in their care of patients with this condition. This review has the potential to positively influence the way we as optometrists care for our glaucoma patients, making it extremely valuable to our profession, and has thus been identified as the inaugural CFEH paper of the month. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/cxo.13114

01.01.2022 Congratulations to Wilson Luu and his co-authors Barbara Zangerl, Michael Kalloniatis, Stephen Palmisano and Juno Kim on their recent publication in IOVS! Their study investigated changes in self-motion perception in patients with glaucoma and AMD. These changes can lead to patients compensating for their altered perception by moving at a different speed, leading to a mismatch of sensory information which may potentially then lead to an increase in accidents or falls. This paper is open access: https://iovs.arvojournals.org/article.aspx?articleid=2772238
