15.01.2022 Thank you to all our educators who are keeping our students emotionally strong during this difficult time. We know teachers are working hard to adjust their cur...riculum and new modes of learning. Even without the outbreak, teachers already have a lot on their plates. Thank you for spending so much time adapting, engaging students, and pouring their heart and soul into the work. We feel so grateful for teachers who care about their students personally advocating for student access to equipment, internet, and technology. We hope you are able to take time to replenish through selfcare. You deserve it! For #GratiTuesday, write a thank you note to the teacher or ask what they may need and how you can help! From our wonderful partners at LG, specifically from Discovery Education and Inner Explorer, here are some EXCELLENT resources to help right now: From Discovery Education: Join 8.5 million students who are utilizing the free access to DE.X (https://www.discoveryeducation.com/virtual-learning/) a virtual learning hub. At the very bottom access the form to request DE.X or Discovery Education Experience. See the link to free virtual field trips on all kinds of topics, including Discover Your Happy. Visit the viruses and outbreaks channel(https://app.discoveryeducation.com//9ccf523a-5b7a-4856-ae5) within DE.X to provide educators and parents with content to help explain the on-going crisis to their students and children. Enjoy a weekly parent resource, DailyDE(https://den.discoveryeducation.com/participate/dailyde) to provide free grade appropriate learning activity for every day of the week. Access the social distancing app(https://apps.apple.com//social-distance-train/id1503689217) so students understand what safe social distancing looks like. Our partners at Inner Explorer have developed a daily mindfulness app for families, called 'I AM PRESENT', which is an extension of the program used in more than 30,000 classrooms, including many in New York City Schools. You can download the app at no cost(https://innerexplorer.org/compass/family_onboarding), thanks to the generosity of several foundations including LG Electronics and the Allstate Foundation, and strengthen practices for students and families to: Reduce Stress: Guided breathing and relaxation exercises are easy to do and replace fight or flight responses with calm. Boost Immune System: Regular practice enhances health and wellbeing (even improves sleep quality). Improve Learning: With many students working online and at-home, daily use helps kids focus on learning. Foster Resiliency: Teaches children tools to handle challenges with greater clarity and confidence, skills that will last a lifetime. Discovery Talents Education Lg Electronics Inner Explorer

07.01.2022 A great article to consider for professionals working with children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. "Himelstein has worked with teachers who get upset when students dont want to engage in mindfulness a certain way -- perhaps they dont want to close their eyes or wont sit the recommended way. But none of those things are truly about mindfulness, Himelstein said. Forcing students to engage with the practice in prescribed ways may do more harm than good, especially if the student has experienced trauma". Calming down is great and it is a skill that youth can get better at. But if were talking about mindfulness, at its core, we are just talking about being present with whatever it is.

05.01.2022 Underlying anxiety and stress can cause a lot of tension, anger and irritability. Be mindful of noticing these feelings and doing something helpful for yourself... to reduce that level of stress in yourself. Also notice it in others and extend compassion towards them for their experience. And please, keep an ear out for your neighbours. We already have high rates of domestic violence and I am worried for our innocent kiddies. Being at home all day with a parent/parents can be a real pressure cooker situation for some families. If you are struggling financially, struggling with trauma, repeating violent behaviours from your own upbringing etc.... our tamariki could be at risk in these situations. School was a reprieve for these kiddos and that safe zone is now closed. So keep that ear out. Ring the police if you hear something going on and one of our young ones is in danger. Lets support our communities, we are in this together. . .
