24.01.2022 In addition to the $3 million our Government has already committed towards the Cascade Female Factory Visitor and Interpretation Centre project, the Federal Government has announced it will fund more than $2 million, making up the total funding required for the project. It was my pleasure to join Senator Jonathon Duniam, Senator Eric Abetz and Jane Harrington from the Port Arthur Historic Site for today’s welcome announcement that the Federal Government is providing this sign...ificant funding to three of Tasmania’s iconic heritage sites from the COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Fund. Three grants worth a total of $2.65 million have been allocated to the Cascades Female Factory Historic Site in South Hobart, and Brickendon Estate and Woolmers Estate just outside of Longford. Importantly, these vital and exciting heritage projects will deliver jobs for local businesses and contractors whilst maintaining and upgrading some of our most iconic built heritage sites.

24.01.2022 Due to the ongoing effects of COVID-19 on the Tasmanian economy, the Government has made a decision to extend the emergency period for residential and commercial tenancies until 31 January 2021. This decision has not been made lightly, however, the safety and security of Tasmanians is of paramount importance to our Government. Bearing in mind this impacts financially on landlords in particular, in addition to the extension of the emergency period, the Government will also be... extending the availability of both the COVID-19 Rent Relief Fund and the COVID-19 Landlord Support Fund, both of which have been extremely successful in providing assistance to settle rent arrears while allowing Tasmanians to stay in their homes during this challenging period. Landlords and tenants can re-apply for additional support if the tenant is in rent arrears between 1 December 2020 and 31 January 2021 as a result of the impact of COVID-19. This means that up to an additional $4,000 might be available during this period with respect to a tenancy. This is significant support and the most generous of any Australian jurisdiction. The Government has also recently passed amendments to the Residential Tenancy Act 1997 that will allow tenants who are still in rent arrears and have been genuinely affected by COVID-19 to enter into a payment plan with their landlord for outstanding rent arrears at the conclusion of the emergency period. For more information, please visit www.cbos.tas.gov.au

23.01.2022 The Chinese Community Association of Tasmania has existed for more than 50 years, comprising many Cantonese Tasmanians and tonight we celebrate the Chinese New Year. This year is the Year of the Ox which represents determination and rebuilding to make something better - and our Government believes we can build an even stronger Tasmania as we recover from COVID-19.

22.01.2022 A fabulous Bats 4 Boobs Pink Stumps Day today at New Town Cricket Club raising funds for the McGrath Foundation! Congratulations to New Town for winning against North Hobart (all for a worthy cause!), as well as the hardworking organising committee and local club legend, Peter Di Venuto.

22.01.2022 Congratulations Interweave Arts on the 10th Anniversary of REMADE! REMADE is an annual event on the Northern Tasmanian Arts calendar that showcases wearable art, fashion and objects made by Tasmanian designers and artists from recycled materials. The platform aims to challenge artists, designers and the wider community to create wearable pieces of art and is inclusive to artists of different skill levels and diverse backgrounds. Congratulations again to all the hardworking staff and volunteers on a decade of fabulous REMADE festivals.

20.01.2022 A very special 100th birthday celebration for Brian Winspear today, Patron and Life Member of the Royal Hobart Bowls Club, who also served in the RAAF during WWII. Not even COVID-19 could stop the celebration after it was delayed from earlier this year, but fully sanitised today of course to be able to hand safely over gifts and memorabilia!

20.01.2022 Our Government is currently drafting legislation to allow for the voluntary option of criminal trials to be held without a jury in the Supreme Court with appropriate protections in line with other state and territory jurisdictions. Tasmania does not currently have the option of trial by judge alone. Targeted stakeholder and public consultation on the draft legislation is planned to occur before the end of the year. Judge alone criminal trials provide an alternative to jury trials and may assist in helping to reduce court backlogs, along with a range of reforms already passed through the Parliament in the Magistrates Court reform package and more recently, the Court Backlog Bill. They can also allow for better access to justice while taking into account physical distancing requirements as a result of COVID-19.

19.01.2022 As a regular award presenter at the Derwent Sailing Squadron Inc every year for the Launceston to Hobart but unfortunately unable to make it this year, Minister for Sport and Recreation Jane Howlett stepped in to make some of the 14th Annual Award presentations on my behalf. Looking forward to an even larger race next year!

18.01.2022 Opening of the Sailing Season today on board the ML Egeria with the Commodores of local clubs hosted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, welcoming all boats and yachts of all sizes. The weather was dubious but spirits were still high!

17.01.2022 At Port Arthur Historic Site, Tasmania today with Acting CEO, Jane Harrington and Port Arthur employee, Gabrielle Earnshaw to see first-hand the efforts that have gone into ensuring Port Arthur is COVID-safe for both locals and interstate visitors as they return to enjoy everything the national award-winning site has to offer. As the Minister for Heritage, I am pleased that our Government has committed $20 million over the next four years to assist Port Arthur Historic Site M...anagement Authority (PAHSMA) to respond to the financial impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic and to manage the conservation of their World Heritage sites. This funding provides not only job security to the PAHSMA workforce and reassurance to the regional community, but also ensuring PAHSMA can continue to meet the important conservation needs of their iconic World Heritage sites. I encourage locals and visitors to come and experience this extraordinary piece of Tasmanian history. See more

14.01.2022 Caught up with the other man in my life for lunch today sampling the delicious diverse cultural menu at the Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania Cafe at KGV in Glenorchy, which I officially opened a few years ago. A food social enterprise project supported with funding by our Government which provides a pathway to employment for people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Participants undertake practical workplace experience, further gaining training and employment opportunities in the hospitality industry.

13.01.2022 A big day for the Transport Museum of Tasmania in Glenorchy I joined my colleague Minister Michael Ferguson, who officially handed the lease of the railway corridor between Elwick Road and Mentmore Street, over to Rod Prince, President of the Tasmanian Transport Museum Society. In addition, the CEO of TasRail, Steven Dietrich, officially presented the diesel locomotive #2118 for preservation to the Society. A great heritage tourist asset in my electorate of Clark which we assisted recently with public liability insurance also.

13.01.2022 The Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service (TRLS) is hosting a movie fundraiser tomorrow night (Thursday) to support our local refugee community. I was pleased to donate a prize to the raffle which will be drawn tomorrow with some great prizes up for grabs! If you would like to purchase a ticket to this screening of the movie ‘Saint Judy’ click on the link below. To read more about the TRLS, please visit http://www.rlstas.com/

13.01.2022 The release of the Revised Estimates Report 2020-21 confirms our economic recovery is well underway in Tasmania. Almost 80 per cent of Tasmanians have now returned to work since May 2020 and our economy is now expected to grow this year, rather than contract, as Tasmanians return to work. The Report handed down today is proof that we’re delivering on our plan and rebuilding a stronger Tasmania.

12.01.2022 Today is #DogsInPoliticsDay and it was great to have so many four-legged visitors in my and the Deputy Premier’s offices today! Dogs in Politics Day is a tradition stretching back almost 70 years and it is now more important than ever to highlight and thank our canine companions for being there no matter what, especially during a challenging year.

12.01.2022 Only a re-elected majority Gutwein Liberal Government has a clear plan to Secure Tasmania’s Future and we are committed to investing in modern, fit for purpose sporting infrastructure that will benefit local communities. If re-elected, our Government will invest $2 million towards stage one of the Queenborough Oval redevelopment. This funding will go towards upgrading this much utilised sporting facility, ensuring it is fit for purpose and meets community expectations.... Stage one of the project will address the immediate needs of the redevelopment, and includes demolition of existing grandstand and clubrooms, construction of new change rooms to incorporate facilities for female participants, function room and match day facilities. The total project cost for stages one and two is estimated at $6.7 million and the remaining funding will be sought in collaboration from the owner if the facility, the Hobart City Council, and the Federal Government. Queenborough Oval is a multi-sport facility utilised by over 700 members from South Hobart Sandy Bay Cricket Club, Sandy Bay Junior Football Club and Hutchins School Old Boys Football Club, however many of the current amenities are outdated and the proposed redevelopment will provide much needed upgrades to the many sporting clubs who use the facility. We are committed to helping all Tasmanians participate in sport and physical activity.

11.01.2022 I was so pleased today to announce that if re-elected, our Liberal Government will provide a 50 per cent increase in operational funding for Tasmania’s cultural and creative industries. Our program will offer an additional $1.2 million each year over four years in operational assistance to support our vibrant artists and arts organisations to deliver a range of activities and programs that will inspire communities and audiences, and help deliver confidence into this incredibl...y important industry. We are also committed to investing an additional $200,000 for a small grants program that will support Tasmanian artists returning to the ‘gig economy.’ This program will provide individual grants of up to $2,000 and is designed to help artists, including those that are sole traders, freelancers and self-employed, to get back to work. For example, grants could be used towards the purchase of equipment hire or upgrades, lessons, workshops and studio hire. I’m really excited that this new funding commitment will support small local events in local communities, ensuring that the opportunity is spread across our regions and can benefit artists all around the State. These additional funds will complement the significant support of more than $11 million we are already providing to the State’s cultural and creative sector during an incredibly challenging 12 months for artists and arts organisations, and also builds on our recent announcement that a re-elected majority Gutwein Liberal Government will provide an $8 million Events Support and Attraction Fund, to secure existing iconic events and festivals like the Tasmanian Chamber Music Festival I launched today, and importantly, attract new ones. Our Arts Policy can be viewed at http://lbr.al/xcon

11.01.2022 It’s wonderful that even in this highly constrained time due to COVID-19 that art is still happening but is happening in different ways than just a few months ago! Congratulations to artist, Lauren Black, on her debut film ‘A Complex Beauty: the making of an exhibition,’ which launches tonight at Wide Angle Tasmania Inc. Lauren recently received funding through Arts Tasmania's Arts and Screen Digital Production Fund, as part of the Tasmanian Government’s Cultural and Creative Industries stimulus package. This fund was designed to support Tasmania’s screen practitioners, artists and arts organisations whose work has been cancelled, postponed or disrupted by COVID-19. Lauren collaborated with Tasmanian film maker, Pete Harmsen, to make a film about her arts’ practice and exhibition.

11.01.2022 The Hobart City Dance Challenge will be on Friday, 2 October until Saturday, 10 October and I am delighted to be a sponsor. This is a wonderful opportunity for performers to compete on the beautiful Theatre Royal (Hobart) stage. Competitors will range from the under 5’s up to adults - so no excuses! Prizes, prize money and trophies are on offer so dust off those dance shoes and tap, jazz, hip hop, sing & dance your way back to the stage. A huge thank you to the John X Presents Team for re-engaging with the community and offering this opportunity for artists to perform in a professional space. Check the Theatre Royal website for more information - https://www.theatreroyal.com.au//hobart-city-dance-challen

10.01.2022 Wiggles the Boxer and Ginge the cat were both on their very best behaviour when I launched Tasmania’s first veterinary CT (computer tomography) scanner today at the newly established Veterinary Imaging Tasmania (at the North Hobart Veterinary Hospital but in partnership with Tasmanian Animal Hospitals) this afternoon. The state-of-the-art scanner is available for referrals from all other veterinary hospitals around the State and will also be used for research and teaching. The new equipment means Tasmanian vets, owners and pets can be provided with top quality diagnostic imaging so animals of all descriptions can receive the most appropriate and highest quality clinical care.

09.01.2022 Tasmanian artists and arts businesses will soon be able to share in $1 million as part of the Tasmanian Government’s Arts Recovery Support Initiative with applications opening on 11 January 2021. Under the new initiative artists, arts organisations and arts businesses may apply for up to $10,000 to cover earnings lost as a result of cancellations due to COVID-19. This initiative is designed to help people recover and sustain their arts businesses and practices to ensure that Tasmania’s renowned creative industries continue to thrive and provide experiences for audiences. For more information and program guidelines visit Arts.tas.gov.au/grants_and/arts_recovery_support_initiative

08.01.2022 Our Government is releasing a second round of ‘Make Yourself at Home’ Travel Vouchers on Wednesday, 30 September at 7.00pm worth an additional $5 million, bringing our total investment in encouraging Tasmanians to explore their own State to $12.5 million. Vouchers will be available at http://makeyourselfathome.com.au/ and to support those without digital access, Tasmanians will also be able to register by contacting the call centre on 1800 344 077 between 7pm and 9pm that evening.

08.01.2022 Congratulations to all finalists and category winners at last night’s 2020 Tasmanian Young Achiever Awards held virtually, especially 18 year old Toby Thorpe, who is this year’s recipient of the Premier's Young Achiever of the Year Award. Toby led the Energy Futures Team at Huonville High School to become the sole Australian finalist in the International Zayed Sustainability Prize and the winner of $100,000 (US). Toby has represented his community twice at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and has spoken at multiple e-meetings across the world. Last night, Toby took home an additional $2,000 and an amazing overall winner trophy. Congratulations again to Toby and all of our 2020 Tasmanian Young Achiever Award winners!

07.01.2022 It’s wonderful to know Tasmania is kicking goals in women’s football, with the highest percentage of female players of any Australian state or territory at 26 per cent of membership. Therefore, it was pleasing to hear today at Football Tasmania's (FT) Female Football Week Awards held on Parliament Lawns that FT has set a long-term goal of achieving complete gender equity in football with a 50/50 male/female participation split. I am sure the usual spike in numbers will occur ...when the 2023 Women’s World Cup is held in Australia and this will help see this become a reality, and so we are all working together to ensure Tasmania has the best possible chance of securing matches and training camps. This truly is an opportunity to showcase Tasmania on the world stage, while also creating increased opportunities for women and girls to get involved in sport. Our Government has invested $10 million over two years to the Levelling the Playing Field Grants Program to upgrade local sports facilities for girls and women (frequently owned by local councils).

07.01.2022 Today, I was pleased as Attorney-General that the Justice Miscellaneous (Court Backlog and Related Matters) Bill 2020 passed the House of Assembly. This Bill has been developed and progressed in close consultation with key legal stakeholders over a period of time, including the Magistrate and Supreme Courts and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. These reforms ensure all Tasmanians have access to an efficient and effective justice system in which court proceedings are able to be finalised in a timely manner.

06.01.2022 Our Government recognises the importance of Tasmania’s cultural and creative sector, and we have provided significant support in excess of $11 million to artists and arts organisations during what has been a challenging 12 months for the sector. The Premier and I recently had a constructive meeting with theatre representatives where it was agreed that we will continue to work together to a pathway forward for theatres that is COVID safe. Today we are pleased to announce that ...Tasmania will be in a position to adopt the National recommendation and move to 100 per cent seating capacity in theatres and sporting venues indoor and outdoor across the state by early next month. The advice from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee to National Cabinet today, was that if community transmission remains contained and we continue to manage international arrivals, then ticketed venues will be able to move to 100 per cent seating capacity. This is great news and a huge step forward for our vibrant local arts sector and sporting venues. Public Health will work closely with venues to ensure they have COVID safe plans so that as many Tasmanians as possible can enjoy our local productions and events in a COVID safe way.

05.01.2022 Our Government has worked hard in conjunction with Public Health to ensure Tasmanian theatres can get back to 100% capacity when it’s safe to do, so we’re very pleased to have delivered this great result!

05.01.2022 Yesterday the Hobart Bangladesh Community held a badminton tournament at the South Hobart Badminton Centre courts to come together to celebrate the sport, integrate communities and have some fun participating. It was my great pleasure to sponsor them again and present the awards for the day, and to thank the committee and all their hardworking volunteers for putting on such a great day!

03.01.2022 Since launching the Fuel Price Reporting Scheme earlier this month, approximately 10,000 Tasmanians have already utilised the technology (website and app) to access real-time fuel prices and find the best deal for fuel around the State. All Tasmanians are encouraged to download the free app. The combined market power of motorists is expected to drive down prices at the fuel bowser. The ‘FuelCheck TAS’ app is available for free download at the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, or to access the website visit www.fuelcheck.tas.gov.au

02.01.2022 Keeping Tasmanians safe has been our number one priority during COVID-19 and it will continue to be our priority as we move towards relaxing our border restrict...ions. Today I announced that we plan to open to low risk COVID states from 26 October. We've been working hard to prepare, but we need all Tasmanians to keep on top of COVID by following some simple rules. 01.01.2022 I was delighted yesterday to be part of the unveiling ceremony for the first of four commemorative statues as part of the From the Shadows program, an initiative following on from the huge success of the Footsteps Toward Freedom project statues in the forecourt of Macq01 on Hobart’s historic waterfront, created by internationally renowned Irish sculptor Rowan Gillespie. The statues recognise the some 15,000 convict women and free children who arrived in Tasmania, then known a...s Van Diemen’s Land, from 1803 to 1853. The first of the latest statues is located outside the Cascade Female Factory in South Hobart and was modelled on Brydie, a descendent of Martha Gregory who was transported to Tasmania from England for seven years for stealing. The statue was designed to represent the struggles of convict women, particularly mothers, bringing their lives and stories out of the shadows and weaving them into Hobart’s historic and heritage landscape. As an arts project, From the Shadows promotes reflection and connection to the historic landscape for locals and visitors alike and as both Minister for the Arts and Minister for Heritage I’m only too happy to champion projects such as these - the statues will contribute to Hobart’s existing international artistic reputation and the statues represent a significant investment in heritage tourism. I am extremely proud to be a longstanding supporter of this initiative and to contribute to the funding from our Government for both projects. Congratulations to Dr Dianne Snowden AM, Bob Gordon and their Committee for making the project a success.
