25.01.2022 Nature pills - you cant overdose on them and best of all theyre free! Weve known for a while that spending time in nature reduces stress but for the first time, a study has established an evidence-based dose to significantly reduce cortisol levels. Until now, its been unclear how much is enough, how often we need to do it or even what kind of experience will be of benefit. The study took place over 8 weeks and participants were asked to take a nature pill with a dura...tion of 10 minutes or more at least three times a week. Cortisol levels were measured from saliva samples before and after the nature pill once every couple of weeks. The data revealed that the greatest payoff in terms of lowering stress hormone levels came after spending 20 to 30 minutes strolling or sitting in a place that makes you feel in contact with nature. Nature pills could be a low-cost solution to reduce the effects of stress and the negative health impacts which stem from indoor lifestyles dominated by screens. So there it is folks. Not much of an investment in time or effort, yet the benefits are amazing. How do you take your nature pills or how could plan to take them in future? Do you take your lunch to a shady park near your workplace? Or do you have a beach or green open space near your home you get amongst? 23.01.2022 Playing tourists in our own city today. Glorious day for it after all the rain this week. Immersing ourselves in nature can have significant psychological and physiological effects. It reduces blood pressure, cortisol (stress hormone) concentrations and enhances natural killer cell activity to improve immune function. Psychologically it increases positive feelings, improves mood and cognitive function. The beautiful clean air, sunshine and flora bursting to life made i...t a great start to Sunday. What are you up to today?

23.01.2022 Today is International Womens Day. This day is recognised globally as an opportunity to celebrate the economic, cultural, social and political achievements of women. Id also add to that HEALTH AND PERSONAL GROWTH achievements. When a woman becomes empowered to regain control of her health and she displays strength and dedication to follow a treatment plan, the results are amazing. Ive seen some powerful, inspirational examples of this in the last year - women whove... had real health struggles theyve been able to turn around. When women support each other, incredible things happen. Is there an amazing woman in your life whos shown courage in the face of her health issues thats inspired you to make changes in your own life either from a physical or emotional health perspective? #celebratewomen #internationalwomensday

22.01.2022 I love this quote. It pairs beautifully with another - GENETICS LOADS THE GUN AND THE ENVIRONMENT PULLS THE TRIGGER. These quotes suggest that for the most part, when we take a proactive approach with our diet and lifestyle, we can influence our disease risk. The genetics we are born with are pretty much fixed and like a light switch, genes are either switched on or off. Just because were born with a genetic susceptibility, doesnt automatically mean well have that switch flicked on. Diet, lifestyle and our physical environment controls many of these switches. Its all about what we eat, how we interact with others and how we choose to live our lives. Learning how these factors contribute to the gene gates can be instrumental in guiding our bodies toward health or disease.

22.01.2022 Setting small health goals that lead to rewiring of behaviours could be the most important thing you do to prevent and reverse chronic disease. But sometimes the goals we set for ourselves are too grand for where were at right now in our health journey so its easy to become disheartened and give up, reverting to unhealthy behaviours that got us into our health mess in the first place. I wish I had a dollar for every time Ive been asked for the magic pill - the quick-fix so...lution to a health issue so that the unhealthy behaviours can remain in place and the illness will just magically disappear. Sometimes that magic pill will hit the mark on its own but more often than not, long term success comes from combining the medicinal treatment with nutritional and lifestyle changes. This can be a daunting process. So how do you set yourself up for success? Research has shown the you are more likely to achieve your health goals if theyre small and achievable. In my latest blog post, I talk about setting SMART goals - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely. Check out my latest article on Getting Smart With Your Health Goals. https://evokenaturopathy.com.au/2019/10/16/health-goals/

21.01.2022 Theres much we can all be doing in the current health climate to build our immune systems, particularly when it comes to viruses and support for the respiratory system. Inadequate levels of several nutrients have been linked with impaired immune function, resulting in increased severity and susceptibility to infectious diseases. Heres a small selection of some key nutritional and herbal medicine players for supporting immune function. ZINC deficiency results in a compromis...ed immune system and although most studies are limited to rhinovirus (the common cold), its been demonstrated to reduce symptoms and duration. VITAMIN C is one of the best known immune supporting nutrients with deficiency resulting in impaired immunity and higher susceptibility to infections. VITAMIN A is a well studied nutrient with regard to viral infection. The severity of several viral infections increased in the presence of a vitamin A deficiency. It has an affinity for the epithelial cells of the respiratory tract making it a worthy consideration for respiratory tract infections. HERBAL MEDICINES possess therapeutic properties that may provide support to the immune system against viral infections. Studies have shown LICORICE to be an effective ANTIVIRAL for numerous viruses by weakening viral activity. Likewise, ASTRAGALUS has demonstrated antiviral activity against rhinovirus and increases white blood cell production to reinforce the bodys capacity to resist infection. Although these are natural medicines, theyre capable of exerting a therapeutic effect in the body and should therefore not be considered a blanket approach to building immunity. Theres therapeutic doses to take into consideration (either getting too little or too much) and interactions with other medications. If youre needing some tailored advice, please get in touch for an acute consultation.

20.01.2022 I bet you already know this.. That the thyroid gland in the neck regulates your bodys metabolism and functions including heart rate, body weight, body temperature, menstrual cycles and more. Some of the telltale signs of a low functioning thyroid include: Fatigue... Dry skin and hair Low mood Cold hands and feet Constipation Weight gain or difficulty losing weight BUT DID YOU KNOW That generally when a GP tests your thyroid levels, they are only testing the signaling hormone that is sent from the pituitary in the brain which is telling your thyroid to either speed up or slow down? This test is known as Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and gives us no indication as to how the thyroid is functioning. To really understand whats going on, we need T3 and T4 levels, the two hormones which are instrumental in facilitating the metabolic processes of the body. When we get these levels, we can determine what action is required to restore the thyroids optimal functioning. There are some specific nutrients such as zinc, selenium, tyrosine and iodine that are required to make all this work well, none of which are in your doctors toolkit and probably why the majority dont test T3 and T4. Im like a dog with a bone when it comes to uncovering whats at the core of your health issues and I have the time to listen and to take in all your concerns. Ill usually always test all thyroid markers to reveal an underlying problem rather than band-aiding the symptoms. If you can relate to any of the thyroid symptoms or feel youre not being heard by your doctor, find a qualified health practitioner you can work with to get you back to a place of health and happiness.

19.01.2022 When I was in my 20s, like many young women, I was on the pill to avoid any unexpected surprises. I remember strictly adhering to the week of red sugar pills so that Id still get a period, thinking this was the most natural thing for my body. But did you know that a pill bleed is not a real menstrual bleed? Its a fake period! A pill bleed is actually a pharmaceutically induced withdrawal bleed from the synthetic hormones that are the oral contraceptive pill. The pil...l shuts down the ovaries so that ovulation does not occur. But OVULATION IS THE MAIN EVENT OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE. If we ovulate naturally, we go on to produce progesterone to thicken the uterine lining and a period follows. A period is a great indicator of a womens underlying health. It should arrive smoothly, regularly and without symptoms. Women are often prescribed the pill to normalise periods and regulate hormones but the truth is that pill hormones are not better than your own hormones. We need our own hormones like oestrogen and progesterone for reasons other than producing babies, like bone and brain health. When ovulation is shut down, progesterone is not produced and its this hormone that provides a calming effect on the stress response, enhances hair growth and increases bone density. Many women experience negative effects on their mood when they start on the pill with a 2016 study finding that women who used hormonal birth control were more likely to be diagnosed with depression. This doesnt mean that all hormonal birth control is off the table, but women need to understand more about how the pill works, particularly that it shuts down natural hormones. If we were all aware of this, there might be a lot more of us choosing alternatives.

18.01.2022 Christmas is a time of togetherness, joy and revitalisation. But the all too familiar cycle of overindulging, then napping before waking to start it all over again, paves the way for discomfort and guilt. My approach to diet is not so much about deprivation, especially at Christmas when youre catching up with family and friends. Whilst its time to have fun and enjoy the choices you make, it can be difficult to keep health goals on track. Heres a few healthy tips you ca...n adopt to keep you free from discomfort, regret and guilt: Eat mindfully take note of how your body is feeling and avoid continuing to eat after youre full. Enjoy a breakfast smoothie to allow some flexibility at lunch time. Include lots of salad and veges make fresh salad and veges the hero on your plate. In terms of protein, turkey is a good source of tryptophan, the precursor to serotonin (our happy neurotransmitter). Get moving start the day with a morning walk. Keep hydrated water keeps you feeling fuller and is great for skin health, brain function and digestion. Food is a source of spiritual, social, cultural and physical nourishment. Let it bring pleasure, thoughtfulness, awareness and positive connection between what you eat and those you share it with. And if you happen to fall off the wagon over the festive period, knowing you can get back on is the most important thing.

17.01.2022 Did you know that what you put on your skin is absorbed into the bloodstream within 26 seconds? The skin is the largest organ of the body and because its permeable, it absorbs what you put on it. It makes sense then that what you put on your body is just as important to your health as what you put in your body. Yet so many personal care products, including those manufactured for babies and children, contain a bunch of chemicals that have never even been tested for safety...! Some of the nasties that are commonly included in these products include parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, PEGs, silicones and phthalates. Parabens are hormone disrupting chemicals that have been found in breast cancer tumours and may contribute to impaired fertility and early puberty in girls. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, also known to disrupt hormones, can cause skin and scalp irritation and can remove the natural oils from your skin. Phthalates have been found to block testosterone and increase the risk of breast cancer. Mineral oils are a by-product of the petroleum industryneed I say more? Natural, high-quality skincare is the best alternative to protect you from these hidden, harmful ingredients. Thankfully, there are companies who are committed making a difference in the skincare market, offering safe and natural products. Im super excited to be affiliated with Dianne Caine Australia, a Perth-based natural skincare company who have a gorgeous range of skincare, body care and hair care all made right here in Perth. Ive loved Dianne Caines range since I came across it a few years ago and I believe its a great fit for me and you as part of the Evoke Naturopathy community. 16.01.2022 Im turning 50 this year and Im excited for whats ahead. Whilst no pension entitlement just yet, theres the prospect of discounted insurance premiums and gas charges, the opportunity to provide our own stool sample as part of the National bowel cancer screening program (jealous yet? ) and we could move into a lifestyle village if we were inclined mind you, a mental health facility is probably more appropriate with teenagers still under roof. All these perks, despite... the gloomy picture my hubby painted recently when he announced that weve seen more sunsets than we have sunrises left. Theres another milestone on the doorstep for me and many of my female clients..MENOPAUSE, which typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. Its trying to sink its claws in with random hot flushes and some spurts of heightened anxiety. But Ive employed some killer naturopathic treatments that are working a treat. Heres a bit about what Im doing: Feeding my ADRENALS have been for the last few years because I knew my time was coming. You see, low adrenal function from long term life stressors is one of the most important underlying causes of menopausal symptoms. When the ovaries wind up and stop producing sex hormones, the adrenal glands take over some of the function. If your adrenals are depleted when you hit menopause, then youll generally have a rougher time of it. SYMPTOMATIC TREATMENT FOR THE HOT FLUSHES with cooling herbal medicines like Sage and Zizyphus, the latter being specific for night sweats. LOOKING AFTER MY LIVER so it can metabolise and remove the oestrogen thats all over the shop. Im doing this with a herbal medicine supplement and including liver loving foods like leafy greens, broccoli, onions and plant-based proteins. PROTECTING MY BODY FROM FUTURE DISEASE RISK of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Calcium requirements are increased in menopause and high sources are found in unhulled tahini, parsley sardines and green leafy veges. Increasing omega 3s helps promote healthy hormones and reduce inflammation. The winners here are oily fish, free-range eggs, seeds and omega 3 supplements. When you have someone on your health team who understands hormones and gets what youre going through because shes also going through it, menopause is really straight forward to treat. I offer free 15 minute compatibility calls if you or anyone you know wants to have a chat about how I can walk the menopause path with you or that of any other health issue.

16.01.2022 Roundup..glyphosate Chemical names youve probably heard bandied around a bit over the last few years especially since chemical giant Monsanto has been ordered to pay out millions of dollars in compensation claims to individuals whove suffered chronic health issues following exposure to the herbicide - one for a whopping $402 million!! Australias first Roundup lawsuit was launched earlier this year by a landscape gardener whos contracted non-Hodgkins lymphoma. This i...s the stuff councils are spraying over our parks and common areas and its become a linchpin in grain production in Australia. Its now common practice to spray crops like wheat, oats, rye, barley, sugar cane, lentils, beans and chickpeas with glyphosate shortly before harvest to kill the leaves so the crop dries out more quickly and evenly. Its all about yield and profits but at what expense? You see, Monsanto argues that glyphosate is harmless to humans because our cells dont have the shikimate pathway which it inhibits, but our gut bacteria DO have this pathway. Glyphosate jumps right into the pathway and disrupts the synthesis of proteins such as tryptophan which is the precursor to serotonin, our happiness neurotransmitter (check out my last post titled Gut Feeling for more on this). In the same way, glyphosate disrupts the synthesis of tyrosine , needed by the thyroid gland to control our metabolism. Here you have just two detrimental effects on health mental health and obesity and yet there are so many more. One of the most insidious effects glyphosate has on the human body is its ability to insert itself into DNA replication by taking the place of glycine, a protein with a very similar molecular structure. Double dutch? Essentially this means that many body systems can become diseased because tissue repair and organ function becomes defective. Some of the predicted consequences are: Neural tube defects Autism Fatty liver disease Obesity Underactive thyroid Impaired iron levels Kidney failure Insulin resistance and diabetes Cancer So what can you do to protect yourself? Go organic particularly for the foods listed above. Eat plenty of sulphur veges to nourish your liver eg. Leeks, onions, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and brussels. Eat probiotics and naturally fermented foods. And heres the golden nugget Apparently apple cider vinegar may have a microbe that can break down glyphosate. Check out the ABCs Four Corners program on The Monsanto Papers which went to air last year. https://www.abc.net.au/4corners/the-monsanto-papers/10352384

13.01.2022 How glorious was that cool change this morning after the scorcher yesterday? The cloud, the cool breeze and these beautiful pink flowers provided the backdrop for my walk this morning..... my much needed walk. A chance to break out of the house where weve experienced some steep teenager challenges this week. I never thought there was so much credence in that saying "Little kids, little problems - Big kids, big problems" until I started living it. It can be a rough road he...lping them negotiate their way through it all but on the flipside, oh so rewarding. We all know how good exercise is for the physical body, but the positive effects on our mental and emotional health are immeasurable. Getting out of your usual "zone" and getting amongst nature feeds the soul. What are you doing today to top up?

10.01.2022 Many of you have been in touch asking what more you can do to keep your immune system supported during the current pandemic. 10.01.2022 Is it really that necessary to be buying only organic fresh produce? Its a question Im asked often and I believe its one of those areas where there are exceptions to the rule, because going organic across the board can get expensive. If an individuals diet is devoid of or low in fresh fruits and vegetables that provide rich sources of fibre and antioxidants, then increasing these healthful foods, whether organically or conventionally grown, outweighs the risk of pestici...de exposure. The Environmental Working Group releases a Dirty Dozen each year a list of the most pesticide affected fruits and vegetables. The list is derived from US tested produce and here in Australia, our conventional farming practices often mirror those used in the US where pesticides, genetic modification and synthetic fertilisers are utilised. If you cant afford to buy all your fresh produce organic, keep the Dirty Dozen list handy when youre out shopping to help you make better decisions to reduce your chemical and pesticide exposure.

09.01.2022 Frustrated and angry. These are emotions experienced by many Australians who proactively look after their health using science-based naturopathic care after the Federal Government removed private health fund rebates for Naturopathy in April this year. The Governments decision to do so is based on flawed research and should be repealed. ... This extract from the review report has been omitted from the media until now and therefore the public have been unaware of the extent of the injustice that has impacted on their health choices. SRs (systemic reviews) of components of naturopathy, for example, massage therapy, acupuncture, individual herbal agents or natural products, were not included. What the?? This means that any clinical studies or scientific reviews on any herbal product, vitamin, mineral or other supplement were deliberately excluded however this is 99% of how Naturopaths treat patients. It led the Government to conclude that there was not enough scientific evidence to prove that naturopathy works. This can be equated to reviewing the services of a doctor without including prescription medicines or surgical intervention! The term for this is spoliation of evidence, which is grounds for the reviews conclusion to be invalid. The Federal Health Minister, Greg Hunt has promised a review of the review however this will take 12 months and mean that Australians miss out on rebates for their health choices in the meantime. Have your say by signing the petition so we can show the Government we want a reversal of the legislation and reinstatement of health fund rebates NOW! Please feel free to share this post so we can maximise support for the petition - *** Please check the box at the top that says "include original post".

08.01.2022 The apple doesnt fall from the tree when it comes to the genetic traits I share with my mum. People say we look alike and even sound the same. Just like mum, as a teenager and young woman, I experienced very heavy periods with lots of pain. I remember her telling me it was normal. At 28, I passed out in the hallway one night from pain I hope I never experience again. Days later, my gyno handed me a diagnosis of endometriosis and I was off for surgery to clean up a mass ...of endometrial lesions that had formed within my pelvic cavity, even clawing its way inside my right ovary. Lara Briden, Naturopath and womens health guru says that we should use our period as our monthly health report card. Fix your health, and you will fix your period, says Briden. If youre suffering from heavy, painful periods, its important to find out whats causing it so that you can be given the right treatment. Theres three main causes of heavy periods are: 1. Thyroid dysfunction An underactive thyroid is one of the most common causes of heavy bleeding. Having your doctor test your thyroid hormones could help you avoid unnecessary surgery and exposure to hormonal treatment. 2. Low progesterone or unopposed oestrogen Progesterone thins the uterine lining to prevent heavy periods, but youll need to be ovulating in order to make enough progesterone and you may not be ovulating. Some of the reasons you may not be ovulating include PCOS, thyroid disease, perimenopause and more. Low progesterone also allows oestrogen to run unopposed which can also cause heavy bleeding. 3. Endometriosis or adenomyosis These two conditions cause pain and heavy bleeding. A doctor may pick it up on an ultrasound or you may be referred to a gynaecologist. You can also ask your doctor to screen you for coagulation disorders such as von Willebrands, a bleeding disorder caused by low levels of clotting protein. It can take a little digging to uncover the cause of your period problems, but once the cause has been identified, natural treatments can provide a very effective solution. See more

07.01.2022 This scrumptious salmon salad bowl broke my fast at 11am this morning and boy it hit the mark. Most days I dont have time to whip up something like this in between appointments but last night I prepped the salmon, rice and dressing, all ready for constructing the bowl this morning whilst the fam enjoyed their brekky. Im back on the intermittent fasting wagon at the moment, building in a 14 hour overnight fast. Time restricted eating gives the body time to repair its cells..., improves blood sugar dysregulation, reduces insulin resistance, improves heart health and of course, assists weight loss. If done correctly with sensible intake of protein and fats, it can induce mild ketosis and improve clarity and mood. Its not for everyone though. Intermittent fasting is not suitable for children, the elderly, pregnant or breastfeeding women and those with medical conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure dysfunction and epilepsy. If you want to know more about how intermittent fasting and other natural medicine approaches can help with any of your health concerns, you can have an obligation and cost free 15 minute chat with me to work out whether its right for you.

All these perks, despite... the gloomy picture my hubby painted recently when he announced that we’ve seen more sunsets than we have sunrises left. There’s another milestone on the doorstep for me and many of my female clients..MENOPAUSE, which typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. It’s trying to sink its claws in with random hot flushes and some spurts of heightened anxiety. But I’ve employed some killer naturopathic treatments that are working a treat. Here’s a bit about what I’m doing: Feeding my ADRENALS have been for the last few years because I knew my time was coming. You see, low adrenal function from long term life stressors is one of the most important underlying causes of menopausal symptoms. When the ovaries wind up and stop producing sex hormones, the adrenal glands take over some of the function. If your adrenals are depleted when you hit menopause, then you’ll generally have a rougher time of it. SYMPTOMATIC TREATMENT FOR THE HOT FLUSHES with cooling herbal medicines like Sage and Zizyphus, the latter being specific for night sweats. LOOKING AFTER MY LIVER so it can metabolise and remove the oestrogen that’s all over the shop. I’m doing this with a herbal medicine supplement and including liver loving foods like leafy greens, broccoli, onions and plant-based proteins. PROTECTING MY BODY FROM FUTURE DISEASE RISK of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Calcium requirements are increased in menopause and high sources are found in unhulled tahini, parsley sardines and green leafy veges. Increasing omega 3’s helps promote healthy hormones and reduce inflammation. The winners here are oily fish, free-range eggs, seeds and omega 3 supplements. When you have someone on your health team who understands hormones and gets what you’re going through because she’s also going through it, menopause is really straight forward to treat. I offer free 15 minute compatibility calls if you or anyone you know wants to have a chat about how I can walk the menopause path with you or that of any other health issue.

07.01.2022 Ive had a real Bren Brown fix recently. After watching her Netflix special Call to Courage, I picked up and read her book Daring Greatly. Brens a vulnerability and shame researcher and the recurring theme across all the research shes done is that CHOOSING COURAGE OVER COMFORT MATTERS A GREAT DEAL. Vulnerability is pure courage. Its putting yourself out there to ask for what you need. Its talking about how youre feeling and its having the hard conversations,... whether theyre at work, at home or with strangers. Brens coined some brilliant quotes but this one resonates with me both personally and professionally - SOMETIMES THE BRAVEST AND MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO IS JUST SHOW UP. I see it in those who come to see me to get well. This is the young dad running his own business, trying to keep it all together for his family, all the while struggling under the weight of burdening stress and anxiety. Or its the empty nester middle-aged woman whos sick of the hot flushes, trying to lose five kilos before seeking help from a naturopath for fear of being judged or shamed. Or for some thatve already been to seek help with their health issues, its the fear of returning for their next appointment because they fell off the wagon, blamed entirely on the call of the wine and chocolate after a run of hard days at work. Bren also talks about wholehearted living which is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. It means cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough. Its going to bed at night thinking, Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesnt change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging. I dont for one second expect the peeps that come to see me to be already at their place of optimal health but when they make themselves seen, theyre honest and theyre vulnerable, thats pure courage and when they choose courage over comfort, great things happen.

07.01.2022 After giving you the fruit and veg Dirty Dozen earlier this week, its time to get clean with the Clean Fifteen - a list of the top fruits and vegetables with the least pesticide residue. These lists are produced each year by The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. The EWG research genetic modification of foods and the amounts of pesticides in and on our food, amongst other things. Both lists are gre...at to take shopping with you so you know when to buy organic and when its ok to buy conventional. Just as a footnote, Id still recommend buying organic corn as most is grown from genetically modified seed. This includes corn products like corn chips, popping corn and cornflakes. Keep in mind that washing your fresh produce doesnt necessarily get rid of all traces of pesticides and chemicals as theyre absorbed through the entire plant, but it will reduce your exposure. Buying whats in season helps to keep costs down and ensures youre eating the freshest produce. Apples are an autumn/winter fruit so buying them in summer means theyve probably been in cold storage. I love to keep a bag of frozen organic berries in my freezer for smoothies and muffins year round. Always do the best you can with your fresh produce - - fresh produce is better than no produce.

06.01.2022 I was talking to friend and spin instructor Amanda from Body Heart Wellness this morning whos just returned from spending some blissful time up in the mountains of Ubud, Bali. We chatted about the calm and peacefulness of the Balinese people and how weve got our life balance all wrong here in the Western world. Were manifesting stress for ourselves and our families which is causing all sorts of dysfunction in various body systems, driving us as a population into poor hea...lth. Hormonally, stress messes with thyroid hormone to convert it to an unusable form called Reverse T3. For women, stress suppresses the production of progesterone, leaving them with anxiety, mood swings and heavy periods. Stress affects immune function with cortisol suppressing the effectiveness of the immune system. It does so by reducing the number of lymphocytes which fight off antigens, leaving us susceptible to infection. Hello colds and flu! Digestion also suffers at the hands of stress as it suppresses stomach acid production, leading to bloating, reflux and IBS symptoms including constipation and diarrhoea. The surge of cortisol during stress causes the release of stored glucose from big muscle groups. This sees fluctuations in blood sugar which can cause fatigue and ultimately may lead to type 2 diabetes. Stress is an insidious factor underpinning dysfunction in various body systems. Whilst our bodies are incredibly resilient and have an innate ability to heal themselves, they can only tolerate stress for a finite period of time. It might take years to get to the spilling over point, but its inevitable it will occur in some way, shape or form. Before it gets to that point, I encourage you to be proactive in maintaining your physical, mental and emotional health with a healthy diet, physical activity, daily mindfulness or meditation and doing things that top up your tank. Herbal and nutritional medicines are the cream on the cake for stress with specific adrenal and nervous system treatment options to help support you in times of acute or chronic stress. Im here if you need a helping hand.

05.01.2022 A good little wrap up of the COVID-19 Coronavirus. Until effective medical treatments are developed and approved, it makes sense to boost immunity to reduce our susceptibility to illness with some key nutritional players like vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and herbal immune modulators. As is the case in the lead up to every winter, Ive started my family on our immune boosting regime to give us the best possible chance of keeping well.

05.01.2022 Bargain stocking fillers were everywhere to be seen at the shops this Christmas affordable bath bombs, sparkly bubble bath, hand lotion, makeup and perfume. Despite their bargain price point, many of them are toxic when applied to the bodys largest organ of absorption the skin. The vast majority of these products contain questionable and unsafe ingredients. Theyre linked to skin irritation, hyperactivity, hormone disruption, infertility and even cancer. If you have ...hormone imbalance or perhaps thyroid dysfunction, it really is in your interest to be using natural skincare products. The organisations in charge of protecting the Australian people from chemical exposure are doing little to test the safety of the products we use daily on our skin. Take the time to learn the ingredients in the products you are using. What you put ONTO your body is just as important to your health as what you put INTO your body. Thankfully, there are companies who are committed to making a difference in the skincare market, offering safe and natural products. The Dianne Caine Australia range is made right here in Perth, offering a gorgeous range of skincare, body care and hair care. Take a look at their range at www.evokenaturopathy.com.au/dianne-caine-natural-skincare/ and get 15% off your first order with free delivery on orders over $99 ($9.95 for orders under $99).

03.01.2022 Is there really a link between gut health and mental health conditions? You betcha there is. Theres strong bidirectional signalling between the gut and the brain. Youll know this if youve had frequent loo visits right before an important meeting or making a speech. Firstly, when we refer to gut health, were really talking about two main variables THE GUT MICROBIOME (gut flora) and THE GUT BARRIER (the enclosed tube that passes from the mouth to the anus). Let...Continue reading

02.01.2022 Its not always necessary to remove gluten from someones diet, but one scenario where its imperative, is in the presence of autoimmune disease. The human body has the incredibly powerful ability to heal itself. Just think about what happens when you cut your finger. The blood rushes to the surface and clots, immune cells destroy any bacteria, new blood vessels are formed and new skin cells rise to the surface where they gain strength and flexibility. Just as it can mainta...in and restore health when given the right environment and nutrients, the body can turn on itself and begin attacking its own tissue when its fed proteins like gluten. This is especially true when were talking autoimmune disease such as multiple sclerosis, Hashimotos thyroiditis, psoriasis, lupus amongst other. Its termed MOLECULAR MIMICRY. When theres a sufficiently high degree of similarity between a human body protein and a food protein such as gluten, the body is unable to differentiate between the two. The immune system mounts a response to the gluten which can turn against the bodys proteins, attacking tissues and organs. It can attack the thyroid like in Hashimotos, the joints like in Rheumatoid Arthritis or the myelin sheath in cases of MS. Talking with people about removing gluten from their diet for the sake of their health is one of those cases where as a health practitioner, sometimes you just gotta be cruel to be kind.

01.01.2022 Make no bones about it, collagen is a strong nutritional treatment for the symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA). OA occurs when cartilage over the ends of bones breaks down. It affects around one in 11 Australians by causing pain in the hands, neck, lower back, knees and hips. The symptoms are usually seen after 40, following repetitive use of a joint or joints and often comes about due to a break or fall years earlier. Collagen supplementation can bring about a significant red...uction in symptoms, particularly when the highly absorbable form hydrolysed collagen is used. And it packs a double-whammy in terms of its benefits because its also an anti-aging champion, being that its the main protein that builds skin and reduces the depth of wrinkles. Get in touch if youd like to know more about targeted therapies for joint health or anti-aging.
