20.01.2022 It took a lot of emotional energy to get on the water today. Yuck..I’m not wearing a wetsuit Can’t I just wear togs I’m wearing my singlet I don’t wa...nt to get wet Can’t we just go in Grandad’s boat so I don’t have to get my feet wet? I won’t deny that I felt like giving up. Let’s not go. It’s too tricky. She’s going to complain the whole time. It’s easier to stay at home. But paddle we did... and the kids LOVED it. They didn’t want to come home. They loved bouncing over the waves created by the speedboats. We watched a pelican fly really close alongside us...cormorants ducking under the water and a Whistling kite fly overhead. It’s these days we build resilience and see the world from a different perspective.

14.01.2022 My Parenting Commandments (updated version) By Travis Saunders I've often described the relationship I have with my autistic son as the most amazing relationshi...p I've ever had. We make each other so happy and are the best of mates. But as his best mate and his dad I've made a lot of mistakes. What’s helped me become a better dad is listening to the stories, voices and commentary of autistic people around the world. When I did, my life changed. By researching autism and having conversations with people with lived experience, I was able to develop a list of commandments to live by. It sits on my desktop and is forever embedded in my mind. It’s formed our family culture. My hope is that by sharing it with you, it helps other parents and children live a life where they feel comfortable, safe, happy, embraced, included, accommodated, connected, empowered, recognised and given equal opportunities for access to inclusive education and a successful fulfilling life. 1. Your child is awesome. (Shout it from the roof top and remind everyone you meet) 2. Always presume competence. Communicating in different ways does not mean your child has nothing to say or doesn’t understand you. 3. Focus on what intrinsically motivates your child 4. Create positive associations in your child's life 5. Try new things again and again 6. Promote strengths & encourage interests 7. Build a strong community around your child and family 8. Help your child develop outside of school interests 9. Concentrate on friendships, relationships and finding your child a mentor 10. Keep fit, eat well and prioritise getting enough sleep. You are important so don't forget to make your health a priority. 11. Help your child keep fit, eat well and get enough sleep 12. Develop daily living skill routines and independence 13. Include your child in as many different activities as they are comfortable with 14. Reinforce positive behaviour and have fun together. Be adventurous. 15. Use and encourage your child's method of communication at all times 16. Avoid using stereotypes and cliches when advocating for your child 17. Your child has the right to be treated fairly at school and in the community and be involved in making choices and decisions about their education and future 18. Work with the school and members of the community to help create meaningful participation, equal rights and active inclusion for your child 19. Never stop reaching for the stars and when people tell you that you can't reach them walk away, stop, breathe and then advocate. 20. Amplify your child’s voice and commentary to make sure it's heard by those in his/her life and beyond. 21. Choice and control is a human right ensure their method of communication is accommodated across all settings. 22. Seek out autistic voices and commentary. It will change your life and the life of your child. 23. Ensure your child’s executive functioning requirements are met. There is so much information available to support you to do this well. Research how to do it well. 24. Use language that’s empowering 25. Become more aware of how your attitudes, values and behaviour impact those around you and your child and the society we live in. (Travis Saunders is the presenter and producer of the ABC podcast 'The Parenting Spectrum', a member of the Australian Autism Research Council, an Education Consultant, Autism Advocate and travels the country (not at the moment due to Covid 19) presenting workshops and keynote addresses to students, parents, teachers and allied health professionals about neurodiversity and how to be a positive guide. This year he was awarded the honour of 'Parent/Carer of the Year' by Autism Spectrum Australia) If you have any other parenting tips I would love to hear from you in the comments or via email: [email protected] (My incredible son, Patch holding up the SA Media Award for Best Coverage of Public Service Journalism for The Parenting Spectrum which he helped create)
