23.01.2022 Note we are within a suspension area which means fruit should not be moved outside of the area without treatment.

22.01.2022 HOT WEATHER GARDEN CARE Some good advice here from the ABC although I dispute a couple of things. Deep watering less often is better for trees and most ornament...als but berries, vegetables and herbs need daily or even twice daily watering when its over 40 for several days. Use your instinct: if a plant looks withered and scorched give it more water. Remember that although we live in a very hot, dry climate(at this time of the year anyway) water costs about $3 for a thousand litres - less than a cup of coffee and enough water to make a huge difference to many plants. We dont use wetting agents here as they are basically detergents(thats why they foam sometimes) and I am not convinced they are harmless to the soil. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than I could shed some light on this. Sometimes organic soil/compost bought from garden suppliers can become quite hydrophobic so then you dont have much choice in the matter. Good luck over the next few days - I hope all your garden survives! https://www.abc.net.au//water-smart-gardening-to/10716998 See more

22.01.2022 Our new pavilion is finally up before the rains come! Now we can see the new structure, well be considering ways to settle it into the garden setting - your ideas are welcomed. Weve thought of cladding the posts and adding some slats (vertical or horizontal) at the top, adding blinds for wind and sun protection, adding some artwork based on our logo (see below), adding trellising to some areas or around posts. Well also dig a soakage pit along the low end of the roof to catch rainwater - we deliberately didnt have a gutter so that material from the tree can more easily slide off. It will be interesting to see how it behaves in the expected rain, which may give us some guide as to wind and rain protection needed.

22.01.2022 To members ... There are a few Hale peaches left so if you have missed out ... get down there and take one! There are also some beautiful looking beans in the shape bed that are calling out to be picked

20.01.2022 More than the chillies were hot today! Adelaides temperature record broken and much fresh food spoiled Damage was incurred to many of our crops including nashi...s vegetables, walnuts, figs, grapes and stone fruit. It is hard to say what the medium-term effect will be on some of the fruit, but it is not pretty at the moment. The air temperature is one thing; but the radiant heat from sun adds about 10 degrees to the skin temperature of the fruit. Once the skin temp goes through 50 degrees the tissue suffers irreparable damage. Sometimes you will have fruit that looks OK but has brown, damaged tissue well inside. Today we have been above 46 degrees for hours on end and hit a peak of 47.9 which meant we also lost a lot of leaves which will weaken the shading function of the canopy for the rest of the summer. What about the Farmers Markets!? Will they have any fresh prduce? ? Luckily for shoppers, farmers are a resilient bunch and have strategies to keep the quality food supply up: artificial shade, sunscreen for plants, refrigeration, heavy watering, choice of varieties etc See you at the Adelaide Farmers Mkt 8am-1pm this Sunday 27 Jan Well have perfect sweetcorn, plums, herbs, zucchinis, egg plants ,organic wine etc etc!

14.01.2022 Not sure if you can attend to your community garden? It seems a lot of us are uncertain as to whether we are able to attend to our community gardens over the next six days. It is a huge worry if we cannot as I know many of us have produce that we depend on for food, seedlings growing for upcoming crops, and many dollars worth of plants, which are vulnerable considering the upcoming heat....

14.01.2022 Did you know that birds dont sweat? To keep cool, birds will pant (you often see them with their beaks open in warmer weather), spread their feathers to let ai...r flow across their exposed skin, take a bath in cool water or hang out in the shade. With summer temperatures soaring, the single best thing you can do for birds is to place a shallow dish of water in the shade so that they can have a drink or cool off in it. This simple act of putting out fresh, cool water can save a birds life. http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/Providing-Water-Bird-Baths- Image: Peter Waghorn

13.01.2022 South Australians are being reminded not to handle bats. The risks of coming into contact with bats increases during high temperatures, particularly during extr...eme heatwave days like today, when heat-stressed bats and pups are falling to the ground. Bats in the city, which can be rescued, are being cared for right now. However, the heat is impacting them. If you come across a bat that appears to be dead, injured or in distress, please contact Fauna Rescues 24-hour bat phone: 0475 132 093. DO NOT pick up a bat. It can be dangerous and the animal must only be handled by appropriately trained and vaccinated bat handlers.
