25.01.2022 120 MEALS COOKED FOR SHINING STARS Absolutely overwhelmed and grateful for the number of people who dropped in ingredients or donated their time for our Cook Out for the Shining Stars Foundation Street Outreach Service. In a couple of hours we were able to respond to a community need and turn out 120 hot meals for those doing it tough. Thank you Mayor of Campbelltown George Brticevic for dropping by this morning to help us chop up some veggies for the fried rice and en...courage this community effort with your kind words. The team at Oz Funland believe that giving is not just about making a donation, but it is about making a difference! It was lovely to have our friends from other local charities like 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur, South West Multicultural and Community Centre, Life beyond barriers (craft packs) pitch in too! 21.01.2022 TRIVIA TUESDAY Get excited for another TRIVIA TUESDAY! We know you've been waiting all week for this one! Did you know that Dorothy wasn't always going to be an innocent farm girl? Huh?... When production first started for MGM's The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland (who plays Dorothy) was given the ultimate traditional Hollywood treatment. This included a baby doll dress, bouncy, blonde wig and HEAPS of makeup. Luckily, Glam Dorothy didn't last too long. When George Cukor was brought in as the new director, he did away with the wig and cosmetics. George successfully turned Dorothy back into what she was all along: A girl from the Kansas prairie of Frank Baum's classic book. PS: Legendary MGM studio hairstylist Sydney Guilaroff kept the old blonde Dorothy wig, and in 1970 presented it to Liza Minnelli as a memento of her mother Judy, who had passed away in London the previous year due to a drug overdose. Buddy Ebsen, the original Tin Man, had to be replaced due to a severe allergic reaction to the aluminium powder makeup! Huh?! Nine days into production on MGMs The Wizard of Oz, Ebsen found himself in the hospital, unable to breathe from the aluminum-powder makeup he wore as the Tin Man! Thats not too good... "My lungs were coated with that aluminum dust they had been powdering on my face," Ebsen explained in the book The Making of The Wizard of Oz. Nikko is also the name of the Japanese town which is home to the shrine featuring the Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil monkeys.... In a 17th century carving at the original Tosho-gu shrine, the three monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil, Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil, and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil. The artist Hidari Jingoro is believed to have incorporated Confuciuss Code of Conduct, using the monkey as a way to depict mans life cycle. Film maker Kate Blackmore is making a documentary on David Capra, a popular a multidisciplinary artist working with performance, dance and community engagement. David is a HUGE Wizard of Oz enthusiast. The story has inspired much of his work, he has a large collection of Oz memorabilia, is a longstanding fellow member of the International Wizard of Oz Clu...b and is a much-loved member of the Oz Funland family! So with his dear sausage doggy Teena in tow, off David went down the yellow brick road for the shoot before sitting down to chat about all things Oz. 09.01.2022 TRIVIA TUESDAY Do you know that Toto the doggie was paid more than the Munchkins in the MGM Oz movie The little Cairn Terrier Terry (who played Toto) reportedly got $125 while the actors who played the Munchkins, even the three from the Lollipop Guild, received $50 a week!... Reason according to Flowerpot Munchkin Margaret Pellegrini: He had a better agent! Only the main cast of Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Berth Lar, and Jack Haley received a bigger salary than Terry who was owned by Hollywood star dog trainer Carl Spitz. This also meant that a dog was paid more than many working Americans at the time, which was still during the Great Depression. According to the contract, Terry performed her own stunts during the filming, at least up until one scene, when one of the Winkie guards accidentally stepped on her and everyone thought that she lost her life. Luckily, apart from a broken foot, Terry turned out okay. She had to recover for a couple of weeks, so the production hired a second dog as her replacement until she healed! If youve been keeping up with our trivia for a while, you may have come to realise that makeup did not have a great reputation on the set of MGMs The Wizard of Oz. ... While Margaret Hamilton, the actor who played the Wicked Witch of the West, was not hospitalized or unable to make the film, her green makeup, like the original silver makeup for the Tin Man, was poisonous. While the original Tin Man makeup had aluminum dust in it the Wicked Witchs included copper which, if ingested, could be fatal.
