09.01.2022 I’m starting to forget. The other day, over coffee, I chatted with a mom whose daughter was just diagnosed with autism and a few other things. Epilepsy. Langua...ge disorder. The list far too long for a little girl who wears a pink tutu and pigtails. This mom was looking to me to help her. To give the answers and the secrets. To fill her up with hope and take away the sting. I mostly just listened. Because that is what I needed 7 years ago when my own son was diagnosed. As she spoke about her fight, internally and externally, I was transported back to those early days. Before we really, really knew. The denial. Then making the appointment. The ‘am I doing enough?’ The strain it had on my marriage. My career. My relationships. The waiting. Then getting the folder. How it was slid across the table as if it held the secrets to our future. Autism. The good luck. The drive home and feeling so different than just hours before. And finally, the fight of my life. The one I had to shield up for every single day. It was invisible to everyone else. But I was at war. As she spoke about trying to find resources and supports. About trying to convince herself of all the realities that she could see but not accept...not yet. I realized I am starting to forget. Because I’ve taken my armor off. I’ve hung it up. The ache. The longing. The hoping and wondering. I can suppress it now. Because it is replaced with the only thing stronger. Joy. My son is happy. And he is exactly who he is supposed to be. He is Cooper. I searched for 8 years for something. Help. Hope. Easy. Typical even. What I should have been searching for was joy. His joy. And now, over time, it’s turned to gratitude. How lucky am I to have this child in my life who shows me the way? I listened as she spoke for hours. And then I told her how wonderful it will be when she gets through this hard part. The hard part that will drag on for years and turn her inside out. But she will make it through and eventually she will become the person and mother she was meant to be all along. The person after. She wasn’t ready to hear all the yet. I get it. I wasn’t for years either. And there is no rushing. There is no magic pill. It’s a journey. One that deserves grace. As I pulled into my driveway after, I saw a dozen kids playing football in the yard across the street. All ages. Boys and girls. Like a scene out of a 1950’s neighborhood. Then the little girl yelling, ‘can Sawyer play?’ As I stood there watching I saw the fourth grader who looks exactly like Cooper. They could be twins. He was running and shouting and playing. And for a second, I remembered. The sting of what if. Like a paper cut. The tears flooded my eyes fast. What if. I am starting to forget. But I can still go back sometimes. To the other world. The place I thought we’d be. I shut the garage door and went inside. Cooper was waiting for me. Like he always is when I leave the house. Waiting for me to come home. I engulfed him in the biggest bear hug and smiled at his backwards shirt. Hand in hand he brought me to the computer to show me the book he wants for his birthday. An old train guide. The one we already have a dozen copies of. He wants one more. And he giggled when I reminded him he has weeks to wait until his birthday. I know he will ask me a hundred more times today. And that’s ok. I’m happy to answer. I let that smile of his sooth the sting. I am covered in those paper cuts I think. Maybe all parents are. I don’t know. They are invisible to the eye. Scarred over even. They won’t let me fully forget though. My new armor. Let the joy of a happy, beautiful life carry you through. And the gratitude that we get to be apart of something so special dull the sting.

07.01.2022 Autistic Shutdown...And How To Help 'Autistic shutdown is like an internalized meltdown. While the person is experiencing a lot of emotions, they can't express... them outwardly [...] Autistic shut-down is NOT stubbornness, laziness or disrespect. Autistic shut-down is involuntary, painful, exhausting. Please, be patient and compassionate.' For a deeper dive and more suggestions of how to help someone in shutdown, please see: * From Amythest Schaber, Ask An Autistic: What Are Autistic Shutdowns? youtu.be/3WIiL8vBjq0 * From Speaking of Autism - Quincy Hansen, Understanding Shutdowns & Autism: tinyurl.com/vywxvwv (Illustration by Introvert Doodles ; info by Kate @girls_autistic_journey/Instagram)

05.01.2022 COVID19 The Health Hub at Eaton Fair has began implementing changes to help protect our staff, patients and community. How does it effect you?... Upon entry into the Health Hub you are now required to use the no touch hand sanitiser positioned next to the front door. Our staff have commenced temperature checking as part of our check in process. If your temperature is above 38 degrees you will be asked to return to your car and await a call from our staff. You will be requested to wash your hands again on entry to the Doctors room. Why do we ask you to wash again?...... In the time you wait for the Doctor how many times do you potentially touch your face, wipe your nose or mouth? All of these are then reinfecting your hands with potential virus. We have made small changes to our waiting room. You will note that we have removed all communal magazines and increased our cleaning schedules. You will be screened for recent travel when making any appointments. If you have travelled overseas in the last 4 weeks and are feeling unwell do NOT attend our practice in person. We advise that you will need to book a Telehealth appt via the AMS Connect app or if you are worried and or experiencing breathing concerns present to the emergency department. It is important that over the next few months we all work together to keep our most vulnerable in the community safe and our health care workers caffeinated.

05.01.2022 Mental Health Care Plans are changing You might have seen the news that your mental health care plan now covers an extra 10 sessions, which means you can get... Medicare to cover the cost of up to 20 sessions. Here is some more info on what’s changing: When does this start? This starts from last Friday 9th of October How will it work? From now on, when you get a mental health plan it will be for 10 sessions. Once those 10 sessions have been used up you’ll need to go back to your GP with a letter from the person treating you to see if you can access the extra 10 sessions. Can I access this if I already have a mental health plan? From what we understand, those who already have a mental health plan and those who get a new mental health plan are both eligible for the 20 sessions. If you already have a mental health plan it’s a good idea to talk to your mental health professional and GP about how to access the additional sessions. What is a mental health plan? A mental health care plan is something you can get from your doctor (GP) that covers some of the costs of up to 20 sessions with a mental health professional. Will my mental health plan still cover the cost of sessions over the phone or video call? During COVID-19 medicare was expanded so that you could cover the cost of mental health services that were over the phone or on video call (telehealth). This has been extended until the 31st of March 2021. How long will this last? This extension will be available until the 30th of June 2022 Where can I get more information? Fact Sheet: http://www.mbsonline.gov.au//Factsheet-Practitioners-Menta Post from Australian Association of Psychologists: https://www.facebook.com/aapioz/posts/3368070859926337 ID: Light yellow square with grey text reads your mental health plan now covers 20 sessions there is purple, yellow and blue stripes coming in from the sides

02.01.2022 #AutisticMeltdowns happen when an environment becomes too overwhelming. With children, it will seem like they're having a "tantrum" but they're not. Children ma...y not be able to communicate with you on what is happening to them. When this happens, take them away from the situation they're in, ASAP. Give them space and time. Don't ask lot's of questions as this is adding to their stress and they are currently in fight or flight and won't be able to deal with demands placed upon them. Their sensory structure has been compromised and they are trying to gain control back. This goes for Autistic adults aswel. #AutisticShutdowns are when we have suppressed our natural Autistic reactions. You may find that your Autistic child will shutdown after school, because they have suppressed it all day at school. This goes for Autistic adults aswel, if they have held it in all day and have been forced into uncomfortable situations all day. We realise and learn early on, that to survive in these forced situations, we have to mask our Authentic Autistic self in some situations. This will play out as a shutdown later on. #AutisticBurnout is when an Autistic person has suppressed all their natural Autistic behaviours over a long period of time. The brain shutsdown and it is like a very deep Shutdown. These can last from hours, days to years, depending on how much stress the individual has been under.

01.01.2022 To our beautiful patients. The Health Hub will remain open. We understand that with uncertainty everyone’s anxiety will be increased. We are here for everyone a...nd together we can support each other over the coming weeks. We will be in contact to change those appointments that can be changed over to a telephone consult. Those that are attending the clinic we ask that you wear a mask. Our staff will all be wearing masks and will be screening for covid symptoms at the front door. Please do not attend the clinic in person if you are experiencing any covid like symptoms and request a telephone consult if requiring an appt. Please if you are experiencing any covid symptoms attend your nearest covid clinic for testing. Craig, Cahleen and The Health Hub Team
