25.01.2022 Some sparkling new glass birdbaths dropped in by Rob Hayley today. A green spiral birdbath and bee water set and a blue shell pattern birdbath. Check out the options for vessels and bases on the Tread Sculptures website.

24.01.2022 This little fellow is now in his new home (picked up pre lockdown i should add) The client has called him Aiden after the Celtic sun god who welcomes the morning each day & she believes he will guard her garden.

24.01.2022 'Anchored in the Storm' This piece is made from reclaimed steel plates that form excavator tracks and it's taken a while to get it ready for sale. I couldnt get rid of the image in my head of how good it would look on fire and I finally got the right weather and the time to stuff it full of the local scrub and light it up.... I'm glad I was patient as it didn't disappoint! Gee I have a fun job!

23.01.2022 ‘Squeaky’ Glass artist Rob Hayley went all in with the glass details on this little guy. 11 seperate hand cut pieces of glass in 3 different colours slumped together to give the impression of movement.... All the squeaky steel is reclaimed including the little old castors on her feelers.

23.01.2022 Reflecting on some previous work whist on holidays. This front door was commissioned by Hurstbridge clients a couple of years ago and was constructed with a live edge timber slab, reclaimed steel sheet, angle iron from a bed frame, pipe from a light pole and finished with handmade glass dhals from Rob Hayley and a handle made by a local blacksmith.

23.01.2022 Buried Steel loads of character in this old wood stove cowling matched with a lovely simple circle of green glass by Rob Hayley. #steelandglass #metalsculpture #metalsculptor

23.01.2022 Rings of Fire Why choose between a fire pit and a sculpture if you can have both.... Saturday arvo product testing is a chore!

23.01.2022 SOLD Last chance catchup for these three as they all head off to new homes.

22.01.2022 ‘Sunflower’ A small piece commissioned as a special gift for a 18th birthday. Really pleased with it and I will add it to the flower range.

22.01.2022 ‘Sunny Dayz’ A brand new flower design. I forgot to get a photo for scale but the flower diameter is around 80cm and it stands approximately 8ft tall.

21.01.2022 Showing the process. Got to create a commissioned bird in my favorite way this afternoon. No drawing, no plan, building as I found the right bits. The brief was for a bird of a particular size, with attitude and the perception of movement.

21.01.2022 Ive been working with glass artist Rob Hayley to create some new birdbath designs that can incorporate a bee waterer, bird seed feeder or a second birdbath. As with all of out birdbaths the vessels and bases are interchangable. Keep your eye out for a new Birdbath section coming soon to the website that will offer lots of choices.

21.01.2022 This couple of characters fit the smaller garden and will also have handmade slumped glass from Rob Hayley fitted.

20.01.2022 Two new ground flowers ready for delivery including quarry mesh and Japanese glass fishing float stamens. I'm glad others seem to like them as much as I do! The paint on these petals is the only material not reclaimed. The rusted petals will get a lot darker.

20.01.2022 Delivered an online purchase to regular clients recently and got to see the commissioned front door I made them a couple of years ago in place for the first time. It was a steep learning curve at the time but very satisfying. Made with slab timber downgrade sheet steel, melted steel, old steel pipes, old bed frames and gorgeous handmade glass roundels by glass artist Rob Haley. Dave the builder did an amazing job of building the jamb and hanging and latching this incredibly heavy piece.

20.01.2022 'Fetch' The latest character out of the studio is a stick insect/praying mantis. I really enjoyed making this guy in my favorite way using a line drawing, grabbing reclaimed material as it develops and working without a tape measure. Just start cutting and welding and see what happens. Mind you it seems that when I build without a tape measure things end up bigger than I planned!! Karen convenialy walked by in her bee suit as I was taking photos!

20.01.2022 'Two Worlds' Our biggest collaborative glass and steel sculpture to date. Reclaimed steel includes a giant industrial fan cowling, bollard offcuts and rolled steel. Glass artist Rob Hayley slumps one piece of blue glass and one piece of green glass to make this stunning blended color. No filters have been used in these photo, the front, the back and different times of day give different colors and feel.

19.01.2022 'Audrey' The newest owl in the family from 100% reclaimed steel.

19.01.2022 Some new flower designs cut from reclaimed poles. These will be available in singles or bunches, just rust or some colour and stamen variations.

19.01.2022 I love getting photos of pieces in their new homes like these hand cut bollards lit up along the driveway. Thanks Kim and Rudy!

18.01.2022 I realised after my post on Delilah the Drag Queen snail that I didnt include a photo for scale and she is a lot bigger than people thought. Scale pic below. She is now away for glazing.

17.01.2022 A refurb of an old classic I like the droopy aesthetic of this giant flower.

17.01.2022 'Down the Rabbit Hole' I can just picture how this piece will look when the muehlenbeckia climbers are filling in all the mesh on both sides with a nicely trimmed hole exposing Rob Hayleys handmade piece of slumped glass.

17.01.2022 Its always lovely to create a piece for someone as a special memory. A client brought a old plough disc and a big chunk of wood to me from her mothers house that she put aside whilst cleaning it up for sale after her mother had passed away. She asked if i could make something from it as a memory of her mum.... The redgum was lightly sanded and treated with linseed oil and an angled steel cap made to suit the original angle of the post. The plough disc was slotted so it would not retain water and serve as a bird feeder. And lastly a chunk of cloudy red 25mm thick Dalle De Verre glass that Rob Hayley and I reclaimed from the estate of world renowned sculptor Ernst Fries. I hope it serves as a joyful reminder of a mum who loved her garden.

17.01.2022 Installing with Linda MacAulay Artist at Whittlesea Councils brand new all abilities playground complex due to open late February.

16.01.2022 Luckily glass artist Rob Hayley and I have our studios at home so stage 4 lockdown has not stopped us from creating. Hand cut bases and slumped glass colours and designs are all interchangeable and we never shy away from special requests. #buyhandmade #buylocal #steelandglass #rclaimedsteel

14.01.2022 The first sight of spring and the succulent planters start piling it on. I love it! (ceramic by Jack Latti)

14.01.2022 This bee and honeycomb was a test piece to see how the design would work for a much bigger work commissioned by Whittlesea Council. All from reclaimed material I like the steam punk feel to the bee with its stainless steel. The large honeycomb will have numerous panels of painted quarry mesh as its not a setting where glass can be used.

13.01.2022 'The Scholar' Made from 100% reclaimed material this highly educated character is made using everything from spun vessels to pole offcuts and farm tools.

13.01.2022 SOLD Wall mounted Buzzy Beez This yellow glass from the 70s is considered gawdy and cast aside in most circumstances but it makes for great honeycomb and catchs the light beautifully.

13.01.2022 Every now and then as an artist there is a piece that you decide you might like to keep for yourself. This large industrial printers cabinet was imported from Belgium and it was a complete mess when it came to us. It sat around for about a year before finally undertaking a full re think and re build. In order for it to work in the kitchen without getting food stuck in every crack, bolt and nail hole on the old top I covered it in black resin and then took it through four stages of sanding and buffing to get back to the lovely old patina. And wavey blue slumped glass panels supplied by friend and glass artist Rob Hayley of course.

13.01.2022 What a backdrop for this big flower delivered to its new home pre lockdown.

13.01.2022 From Sea to Sky Giant Japanese glass fishing floats transformed into hot air balloons along with some abseilers and pilots. Its a bit nervy welding over the top of glass balls! These guys are SOLD but I will make more to order. #reclaimedglassandsteel #metalsculptor #hotairbaloons #yarravally #nillumbikartistsopenstudios #timread #glassfishingfloats #recycledartist

13.01.2022 'Honey I'm Home' SOLD A more compact version of Buzzy Beez for the smaller home or garden. I like the hexagonal 1970s reclaimed yellow glass in this one it could not suit the honeycomb any better!

12.01.2022 Id love to see this arbor welcoming people to a front door or leading to a special space covered in wisteria or grape vines. Imagine how it would look in winter too with twisted wood weaving through it... Its 1.6 meters wide 2.5 meters long and 2.6 meters tall though height could be lowered.

12.01.2022 Great to get my diving Kookaburra and jumping fish installed in their new North Warrandyte home on Tuesday. I’m really pleased with how she fitted into this beautifully landscaped pool area and most importantly so are my clients.

12.01.2022 Beautiful weather to drop in to Ben and Lisa's Gallery 7 six 5 in Christmas Hills. The Dark Horse Cafe next door makes it even more tempting! They are open today and tomorrow.

11.01.2022 Emerald Orb It starts with a Big glass Japanese fishing float imported to Australia after bobbing around in the ocean, still with some sea scale unremovable.

10.01.2022 I’ve been doing some more landscaping at home and creating some new spots to display sculpture. I like the way this collaborative piece ‘Reflections’ from glass artist Rob Hayley and myself sits in the space. What a treat to have mild steel, glass, and reclaimed copper to work with!

10.01.2022 Doogie is the latest owl to come out of the studio and is made of 100% reclaimed steel. We still have a good selection of custom made artwork available for Christmas so check out the website of arrange a time to drop in for a look around.

10.01.2022 The simple beauty of a moon-gate. #metalsculpture #metalsculptor #steelmoongate #portal

09.01.2022 Did a contactless outside delivery and install of an online purchase at a beautiful property this week. It was mounted on the stump of a huge manna gum. As I drilled into the stump for bolts each time I pulled the drill bit from the wood an army of big bull ants would come pouring out, I don’t know how I didn’t get bitten! It was a lovely spot for a giant flower.

09.01.2022 Spring has sprung at Tread Sculptures. Looking forward to seeing what else will pop up.

09.01.2022 'Gumnut Fire Pit' SOLD A heavy old machine wheel base with a 4mm thick steel fire vessel and a 1.6mm domed lid. A bit of a protection built in with an old cart ring adds some interest and 5mm hand cut gumnut detailing to finish it off.

08.01.2022 Got these guys back with their handmade slumped glass from glass artist Rob Haley. Really chuffed with how they finished up. SOLD

08.01.2022 Its not very often I get to reclaim copper! I got a couple of big copper vessels a few months ago and I have been waiting for the right ideas to come along. Local friend and glass artist Rob Hayley pre stage 4 dropped in a paired set of handmade slumped-glass pieces. ... They have a lovely silver shimmer to them that is set off by the copper and dark steel. This piece would work well inside or outside with natural light showing different moods throughout the day. It could also be backlit at night.

07.01.2022 A prototype flower using reclaimed material. Really pleased with how it looks settled into the sculpture trail. Between a ground flower and a tall flower I can see this height working really nicely nestled into some bushy domestic gardens.

07.01.2022 'Princess Escargot' With a face full of character this snail is a ripper and fitted with a lovely piece of bronze 10mm slumped glass by Master Glass Artist Rob Hayley.

06.01.2022 'Rusty Awakening' The latest large ground flower. I like the inside petals left in their raw form. 100% reclaimed material including used Japanese glass fishing floats as stamens.

06.01.2022 Some new big flowers ‘Lime Spider’ and ‘Yellow Pop’ SOLD Still fun to make!

05.01.2022 'From the Sea to the Sky' What a fun job I have! Giant Japanese glass fishing floats transformed into hot air balloons with a couple of stick figure pilots and abseilers added to the mix. It gets pretty intense welding over the top of expensive glass balls! SOLD ... These ones are going up in a big spotted gum in Healesville but I will make more to order. See more

04.01.2022 A couple of collaborative pieces from glass artist Rob Hayley and myself settled into their new homes in Eltham North and Steeles Creek last week.

04.01.2022 A commissioned Ned Kelly letterbox for a special 60th birthday present. Fun to make and from 100% reclaimed steel.

03.01.2022 Had a bit of fun working on these little hot air balloons made with glass Japanese fishing floats. Some pretty delicate welding involved (is delicate welding an oxymoron)?

03.01.2022 Just finished building a new spot for displaying sculpture and not a bad little cuppa tea spot next to it. I’d better make a little table and chairs I guess. ‘The Bragger’ sits nicely there. It was this big!

03.01.2022 The latest ground flower out of the studio has a big pop of colour. SOLD on its way to Sale VIC

03.01.2022 It makes total sense (in my head at least) that a snail would be a Drag Queen. This is Delilah, she is ready for Rob Hayley to do his glass thing... Cant wait to see her all dressed up!

03.01.2022 A couple of final flower installs before Christmas.

02.01.2022 The latest flower from reclaimed bollard material and a giant nest with reclaimed industrial waste and giant handmade clay eggs from Melbourne Ceramicist Jack Latti.

02.01.2022 Heading to Newcastle as a 50th wedding anniversary present. It's so lovely as an artist when we get to be a part of marking a special time in peoples life. Hand cut fern from reclaimed steel base with handmade slumped glass vessel by glass artist Rob Hayley.
