24.01.2022 November 23rd is the #fightforthebight NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION! Communities all over Australia have been running protests, paddle outs and actions throughout the year, in opposition to Norwegian company Equinors proposal to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight. TOWNSVILLE now has the chance to become part of history and continue the fight to save the Great Australian Bight by joining in a NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION on the 23rd of November.... It may be happening at the opposite end of the country; however, everything is connected. Details: - Meet at 10am on Saturday morning - The Strand Park, North Ward - BYO signs, tee shirts, banners - Please try and walk or carpool as parking is a premium - Wear sunscreen, a hat, and bring a water bottle - Surfriders North Queensland Beach Representative - Lisa Patterson, will be speaking at the event about Equinor and the importance of standing up for our seas. Please have a look at the event for more information: https://www.facebook.com/events/421869458505931/

24.01.2022 Do you have any spare coffee mugs lying around at home that never get used?! Donate your mug and TropEco will give it another life! That way, youll be stoppin...g disposable cups from ending up in landfill! How awesome is that?! Just bring your unwanted (clean) mugs to International Cafe at 10:30am every Tuesday at the Education Central Amphitheatre OR Drop it into the Donate your Mug drop off point (opposite side to the Education Central help desk - check out picture on this post so you know the exact spot! ).

24.01.2022 Myth: It is unsafe for people to use reusable coffee cups at this time, disposable cups are the only option. Fact: There are countless solut...ions that do not involve disposable cups. For example, cafes can implement 'contact-less pouring' into reusable cups. We are seeing some questionable (and often fearful) comments circulating in the media, but its important to maintain perspective. Ensure you only listen to the advice of experts, practice good food hygiene + use your own common sense. Lets keep positive, support local, and maintain our eco-game! See more

18.01.2022 Mundy Creek Catchment Care Group has been working to get action from the regulators in regards to Haven Development's disrespectful and blatant abuse of and neg...ative impacts on our local environment. The issues are as follows: Erosion and sediment control is inadequate: - MCCG sent TCC photos of pollution (sedimentation) event in Feb 20. No change or response occurred. - 8mm of rain last week resulted in another pollution (sedimentation) event. Water the leaving the site was found to be approx. 9 times more turbid than upstream of development. - The controls must be improved to prevent reoccurrence. Tree clearing: - They cleared more trees in the park to deal with flooding risk caused by Haven. - The protection of the tall Melaleucas is inadequate. - TCC should share the entire clearing plan so community knows what else will be lost. - TCC should share the rehab plan so community knows what it will inherit. - MCCG wants assurance from TCC that the plantings on the western bank will be protected. - If further land is required to offset flood risk it should come from Haven Land; no further loss of the existing woody vegetation (including but not limited to those big old Melaleucas) should occur. Marine Plants Clearing: - much of the marine plant clearing that has occurred to date has been done so without permits and outside of their approvals - last Friday afternoon's clearing of salt marsh and marine plants growing on the park side of the creek is also a breach of their approval conditions. Please write to TCC Council to register your dissent and support for the environment and our community. This developer cannot be trusted to abide by their permits' conditions. Please let Council know that you are not happy with the way this Ellis Developments is treating OUR community. Register your disapproval with TCC Enquiries 134810 or email [email protected].

16.01.2022 We are thrilled that a family of Plumed Whistling Ducks have been nesting and residing at the creek and on our Landcare site. Here they are out and about yester...day morning. More reason for us to be diligent and watchful so that we can be sure to protect all species there, while there are 'development' works underway on the site. Thanks to Nina Blackcockatoo for these gorgeous photos. See more

15.01.2022 Hi all. A share from the Permaculture Townsville Inc. Facebook page. Thank you: "Unfortunately the council subsidy offer for Bokashi bins had ended. Most products online with 40% off and postage cost are around the same price as at Bunnings. "We have exhausted the current budget for subsidies to residents for home organics due to a fantastic response from the residents of Townsville. But good news! You can still get up to 40% off compost bins, worm farms, and bokashi bins d...irectly from the Compost Revolution." https://compostrevolution.com.au/australia-wide/"

10.01.2022 Hi all, Sharing this parade event and series of workshops called 'Parade for Nature - ALL IN Its #KeepAustraliaBeautiful Week from the 20-26th August, a campaign focused mainly on marine litter under the theme SOS Save Our Seas. Then the 27th August opens the week to the #ForTheLoveOfTheReef campaign. ... So what better occasion to celebrate our Love for the Reef and to Keep Australia Beautiful than marching all together on the 26th August, in a festive, colourful, artistic, memorable, fun, engaging, eye-opening, social, environmental parade of marine and terrestrial organisms. To prepare the costumes there are a series of Costume-Making Workshops (some with beers, others more family friendly) where volunteers and interested people can get together and work on the realization of costumes and posters for the parade. These workshops will be on: Tuesday 21 August from 6pm @Cactus Saloon Sky Bar Wednesday 22 August from 6pm @The Heritage Exchange Thursday 23 TBD Friday 24 from 12pm @The UniClub at JCU Saturday 25 from 3pm @Drum Circle on the Strand You can also find 'Parade for Nature - ALL IN on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/663542277343127/about/

07.01.2022 Today JCU TropEco was proud to launch the Indigenous cultural use plant and animal trails at JCU's UniCare and UniKids Early Learning Centres as part of the Con...necting Kids to Country project, funded through a Bank Australia Customer Grant. Bindal Traditional Owner and Elder, Aunty Dorothy Savage, provided a Welcome to Country and shared cultural stories from the Bindal people with the children at each centre. This was followed by a walk around the centre with Elder Uncle Russell Butler to learn about the traditional stories, names and uses for local plants and animals found in and around the centres. Interpretive signs were installed at each centre, displaying local plants and animals and their traditional names and uses so that the children can continue to learn about their local environment and cultural heritage. TropEco would like to thank everyone who was involved in the project, particularly Uncle Russell and Aunty Dorothy for kindly sharing their knowledge and time, Bank Australia for their generous support and funding, Brandan Espe for his plant knowledge and supplying the plants for the project, and the staff and children at the JCU Early Learning Centres for their enthusiasm.
