22.01.2022 Normalising conversations about mental disorders is a really important part of increasing understanding and reducing stigma. Both from the perspective of the person who lives with illness and the perspective of those who experience knowing someone with illness. This inspiring couple, Chris Ulmer & his wife Alyssa, recently produced and shared this raw and honest conversation about Alyssa's diagnoses. They generously share their individual experience of living with Alyssa's ...mental disorders and how how they have worked together to improve her wellbeing. Alyssa "...people with mental health struggles worry about being a burdon..." Chris "...I realised I don't need to understand your depression... its just about making the small incremental steps every day..." Together they started Special Books by Special Kids https://sbsk.org/story/ It is a space where disabled and neurodiverse people of all backgrounds share their stories. SBSK https://youtu.be/gKC_N_9aJ8o We you enjoy hearing their story.

21.01.2022 When people say they are struggling with their mental health, the most important thing we can do is listen, not to judge or brush aside it as an inconvenience. Naomi Osaka openly shared that she was struggling and accepted the consequences of not being able to 'follow the rules'. But WTF determined that this was not acceptable. Headlines such as Boycott" and "Bombshell" would not be used if someone had a physical health issue. There has been no wishing her well, hoping to ...see a speedy recovery, or apology for not listening harder... simply disappointment. When someone puts their hand up and says - I am struggling - we all have a duty of care to listen, seek to understand and be present for that person on their terms. We wish you all the very best Naomi Osaka Australian Open Tennis Australia https://wwos.nine.com.au//ba116a18-8afa-4cf9-a304-fd2eadb2

17.01.2022 Lots of things can contribute to our mental wellbeing. In a time when it is easy to think.feel.say something negative, you'll be amazed how doing the opposite might make you feel. Doing good can lead to feeling good. Hope you enjoy this joy filled article on how being kind can comfort us during the pandemic. Plus tips for being kind.... It feels so good that the brain craves more. It’s an upward spiralyour brain learns it’s rewarding, so it motivates you to do it again, Dr. Preston says.

17.01.2022 Mental health and illness does not discriminate but women are more likely to suffer from anxiety or depression than men. This fact has been borne out in Victoria as women express significant increase in COVID related stress and pressures as they more likely to experience social isolation, carry the stress of home schooling and caring for elderly relatives, are over represented in the casual workforce and related economic worries. Thank you Prof Jayashri Kulkarni from Monash... Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre for being an inspirational leader in women's mental health and working with your team to respond to this significant rise in referrals. Thank you Melissa Cunningham The Age for shining a light on this important story. https://www.theage.com.au//absolutely-flooded-record-numbe

12.01.2022 Did you know that what you eat can affect your mental health? Felice Jacka Professor of Nutritional Psychiatry and Director of the Food & Mood Centre at Deakin University explains: Extensive and consistent research tells us that healthier diets protect against depression. Given that depression is the leading cause of global disability, this is critical to understand" She adds A balanced diet feeds the brain, providing it with the nutrients it needs to support a positive mo...od, and improve signalling pathways between brain cells for optimal brain function. 10.01.2022 Last year we sadly farewelled a wonderful man - AFL great Danny Frawley. Today, his wife Anita Frawley confirmed that Danny suffered from neurological disorder chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) We were honoured when Danny had agreed to support One In Five as he was a powerful advocate for improving the mental health of Australia - both from the perspective of awareness and stigma reduction along with the need to fund medical research to help understand why illness occur...s and what we can do to prevent or more effectively treat. We would like the thank Anita for sharing Danny's diagnosis with us. CTE is a serious neurological disorder linked directly to repeated head trauma / brain injuries that may be mild or severe and occur over a number of years. Some of the symptoms include depression, impulsive behaviours, emotional instability, short term memory loss. We hope that through improved funding of research, we can help unlock better preventions, treatments and possibly cures into the future.

08.01.2022 Sandy Jeffs was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1976. At the time, psychiatrists believed with ever psychotic episode her prognosis would become worse. 40 years later, she reminds us that not much has changed in the treatment in Schizophrenia. She believes that research has help us to understand what a diagnosis of Schizophrenia means, but there is still a need to more research in order to: - Develop better and more efficacious medications... - Find the cause of schizophrenia - Unlock cures The barrier to achieving these outcomes is the significant lack of funding for novel research to better understanding Schizophrenia from a biological perspective. Interesting facts about Schizophrenia: * It is a psychotic disorder of perception that impacts 1% of the worlds population * It is one of the least understood mental illnesses * 70% of people living with schizophrenia experience auditory hallucinations ie voices * People living with schizophrenia are 50x more likely that average population to die by suicide * 2 x more common than Alzheimer's * People living with schizophrenia are no more dangerous than anyone else * Schizophrenia is not multi-personality disorder is a separate condition * There are many different clinical presentations of schizophrenia Please donate today @ www.oneinfive.com.au and help us improve the health outcomes for people living with schizophrenia. His big highlights: * It may be as many as 1 in 50 people have it (twice as many people as schizophrenia) * It can take up to 17 years for some people to be properly diagnosed.... * It's not necessarily about being compulsively clean! https://www.theguardian.com//its-no-wonder-we-still-think-

05.01.2022 Great thing to do today ... check this out https://fb.watch/1WEtfAeQjZ/

04.01.2022 I struggled a bit when I was working in New York for five years. Due to situations I could not control depression sunk in and really affected me. Being away from friends and family for so long I felt lost and alone in a big, hustling city. That is not a good feeling when the dark clouds roll in. I started to see a counsellor to try and work through some of the problems but what really helped get me through them were my friends. I would call them, catch up on what was going... on in their life and talk about what was going on in mine. Including the issues I was having! One of my closest mates Bernard Curry really helped me get through the tough times because of his positive outlook on life and his way of making me see through the dark clouds with different eyes. Also knowing that there is someone to listen, support, laugh with me or at me sometimes! It always made me feel better getting off the phone after a good talk with him. If the dark clouds are rolling in for you or you’re just feeling down and having a shitty time then call one of your friends. Preferably one of the funny ones and talk to them. Vent your problems and talk it out. Try to see things differently and have a laugh. You’re not alone and there is always someone that will listen to you and support you. That’s what friends are for! Lots of love, Sully @sullygram77 #SullivanStapleton See more
